A Woman of Jazz: Sarah Vaughan

Sarah Vaughan "Sassy" was a vocalist. She was born in Newark, NJ on March 27, 1924 and according to Dizzy Gillespie, she "could sing notes other people can't even hear." As well as singing, she also played piano.
Sassy soon began singing in Newark at the "Amateur Nights" in Apollo Theater. Only 18 years later she was invited to join Earl Hines' band! She began performing every night with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and eventually became know as "the ageless voice of modern jazz."
This woman was a sensation to the jazz community and became very successful in such a short period of time. She lived a wonderful life and passed away in Los Angeles, CA on April 3, 1990.
